MSNBC Hurricane Maps
An interactive hurricane tracker, built with MSNBC's Paige West to track major storms. Built using Modest Maps and Microsoft's excellent Virtual Earth tiles, the project allows for interactive investigation of both live and historical hurricane paths, wind speeds, and forecasted routes.
Hurricane Hanna:
Something to watch out for (and which can't quite be captured in a screenshot) is the way that interacting with the piece provides a sense for how quickly the various storms move across the water and the land. The back-and-forth interaction between the chart on the left and the map on the right is something that's coming up in more and more of our projects (see Trulia Snapshot) and is something we hope to see more of in the future.
The project allows for direct linking to individual storms, so historical activity can be contrasted and compared. The various images below link to particular storms, and a more complete historical browser is currently in development.
